About John Matthews of Stuart & John's
Growing up, John spent a lot of time with
his grandfather who was 'old-school', and
taught John at a young age the value of hard
work, logging, splitting wood, carrying sap
buckets, and learning about the different
species of trees--especially the sugar
maples. From this closeness with his
grandfather, John developed his love for
work. After high school, John went to one
semester of college, but preferred working
to his time there. To this day, John does
not appreciate a day off--unless it's to go
fishing! Leaving school, he took a job
testing milk at farms in NH, then later went
back to work at Windyhurst Farm, where he
remained for 20 years before leaving to
start his own business. John has now owned
and operated M.E. Matthews, Inc. in
Westmoreland, NH for 13 years, installing
septic systems, driveways, and doing site
preparation. John is a woodsman at heart,
and has been logging and cutting firewood
for many years. He has two sons, J.P., and
Jeffrey, who also help during sugaring, and
his oldest, J.P., works for him full-time at
M.E. Matthews, Inc. John and his wife,
Nancy, live overlooking Windyhurst Farm,
Stuart & John's Sugar House, and the Great
Meadow in Putney, VT. |
